Like many retro computers the Amiga 500 has an external power brick – all of which I am extremely dubious of – with the ability to kill your precious computer should they go wrong. The Amiga power supply is one of the more complicated ones, outputting 3 different voltages, 5v, 12v and -12v, into a custom square power socket – making it more complex, or expensive, to replace.

I originally planned to recap the supply, which I will probably do to the other one I own, but after some research I decided to do a complete transplant with a modern Mean Well supply.

The replacement power supply I used is a Mean Well RPT-60B – for which there are already 3D printable mounts that fit inside the original housing – nice. I did have to de-solder the original connector from the Mean Well, and then solder the original cable in its place.
To complete the transfer I also changed the original power switch, so only the cables are original. All-in-all it was a very easy upgrade.

The new power supply works perfectly – no more worries of it killing my Amiga.
